On the Live Abundantly Podcast today, Jacquelene Hayes is speaking with Allison Nelson. Allison is someone who has dipped her toes in several different things but has finally found her niche. She just started her own business and is finally creating opportunities for herself. Be sure to tune in so that you can start doing the same!
She is a wife and mom of a 2 year old girl living in New England. After working in the corporate sector for a couple years, Allison realized that she needed a change. It started with her being an entrepreneur and even go back to school to get her Master’s Degree in school counseling. A
After a few jobs here and there, she ended her journey in a school setting. She quickly realized that the environment was similar to that of the corporate world where no one seemed happy and there were feelings of burnout. She then became pregnant and it just made sense financially for her to stay home with her new baby girl. This lead to her and her husband having the opportunity to start a business together.
What is your business?
Allison and her husband have an online lifestyle boutique that consists of apparel, hats, etc. They are soon going to be introducing a few new categories including a baby and toddler line. In short, it’s a boutique full of all kinds of lifestyle goods and apparel. The brand isn’t like any other brand. They created it so that everyone would feel inspired when they looked at the products or so that they would speak to them in some way. The apparel has a variety of sayings on it, including this one – which is one they trademarked:
“Praise up, coffee down.”
“I look back before I look ahead and I say ‘what did I do here that I loved?’ ‘What did I do here that I thought was really important?'”
“I never thought that I would make T-shirts, but I love to inspire people and I love to write. So I knew that a blog had to be a part of it [the business]. And I have a lot of background in the nonprofit industry and in giving back so I knew that had to be a part of our mission with the company.”
“It is so easy to get overwhelmed with being a mom and wanting to own a business and to create impact but it’s knowing what balls are rubber, and can bounce, and what balls are glass, and would break.”
“You have to be willing to learn and you have to be teachable. You have to know that throwing money at every little thing isn’t really going yield the best results.”
“The first thing that you make is probably not going to be very good.'”
